The 22nd of April marks International Mother Earth Day. We celebrate this day to remind us that the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance. It should remind us that we should do more to protect the planet. In an effort to do so, many companies, including Caffenu, try to provide consumers with eco-friendly products. However, it is sometimes unclear what eco-friendly cleaning products are and how they work.
Eco-friendly products are products that cause minimal impact on the environment. Additionally, these products go through a production process that considers the impact that the products will have on the environment throughout its lifecycle. We naturally want to produce products that have the least possible impact on the environment.
Eco-friendly products can range from reusable bags and straws, to the chemical composition and raw materials of a cleaning product you use. Because Caffenu is a leader in the coffee machine cleaning industry, we pay close attention to the eco-friendliness of the raw materials of cleaning products we produce.
Over the years, many cleaning products used to contain chemicals such as phosphates and sodium hydroxide, and many products still do contain these chemicals today which can be harmful to the environment. Phosphates are found in certain foods such as deli meats, and frozen food, because phosphates enhance the flavour of some foods. While phosphates are not dangerous in small amounts and traces, too much of them can lead to problems such as kidney and liver damage.
Moreover, phosphates have also been used in cleaning detergents, which end up in the drainage systems, and eventually the ocean. This is not good for aquatic life and living organisms. That is why many companies, including Caffenu, have opted to avoid the use of phosphates in production of cleaning materials.
Caffenu strives to avoid the use of any harmful raw materials in the production of our cleaning products. We do our utmost to keep the environment a priority during production, down to our end product.
The Caffenu Eco Descaler is one example of our objective to provide eco-friendly cleaning. This product is entirely phosphate free, and uses zero chemicals that are harmful to the environment. While this product is eco-friendly, it is still powerful. A misconception many consumers have is that eco-friendly means “ineffective”. That is simply untrue.
Another such Caffenu product is the Caffenu cleaning capsule. The cleaning agent used in this capsule is made with organic and biodegradable materials. We even offer the Nespresso® compatible capsule itself in a compostable form. Although we always encourage good recycling practices.
You as the consumer have the power to decide which products will be successful on the market. So why not choose eco-friendly but highly effective products to clean your coffee machine. The environment will thank you for it!

Coffee machines are essential pieces of equipment in households and the hospitality industry around the world. Coffee machines, both domestic and commercial, are quite durable, offering years of service. However, the durability and lifespan of a coffee machine is dependant on how you maintain it. That’s why it is important to take care of these essential machines.
It is easy to forget to maintain and take care of a coffee machine, especially in today’s fast-paced life. However, you want to remember to give it a clean at least every now and then! Even if you don’t use your machine often, each time you brew a coffee, residue still builds up in parts of the machine. These build-ups can quickly lead to blockage, and eventually machine malfunction.
Whether you use a capsule coffee machine, or an espresso machine, you need to give it a good clean to ensure the machine not only lasts, but also brews quality coffee. If you have a specific machine, but don’t know what you need to clean it, then read this blog to find out what cleaning products your coffee machine needs.
When you should clean your coffee machine is often dependant on the machine you have, and how often you use it. If you are unsure of how or when to clean your coffee machine, then here is a guide on the most popular coffee machines and how to clean them.
When it comes to capsule coffee machines, it is important to frequently give your machine a clean if you are a fan of brewing hot chocolate, or flavoured coffee, and tea capsules. These capsules tend to leave stubborn residues behind, and also the flavour. What’s great, though, is that many capsule coffee machines, have a cleaning capsule to easily remove the stubborn residues and build-up!
Moreover, another thing to consider with capsule machines, and other coffee machines alike, is the need to clean them when left unused for a while. This is because any coffee residue and oil that was left behind after the last use has had time to settle and likely become a breeding ground for bacteria. Any water left behind in the tank or pipes will also likely be old.
So, no matter what coffee machine you have, or how often you use it; you should always remember to clean your coffee machine!
Ever got so excited to try a new coffee in your capsule machine that you forgot to eject the capsule after brewing? This isn’t a problem if you eject it a few hours later before another cuppa. It can, however, become a problem if it’s left overnight or longer, especially if you own a Dolce Gusto® machine. To be safe, on any capsule machine, always eject the coffee capsule once you made your coffee.
Why would leaving the coffee capsule inside the machine be a problem? Well, if you do not remove the capsule until the next day, the coffee grinds inside the capsule would have likely dried up, and in case of your Dolce Gusto® trapped the needle that injects the water. You’ll notice that no matter how much you pull, the capsule won’t come out. This can be very frustrating.
So what to do if this happens to you? Is your Dolce Gusto® capsule stuck inside your machine? First & most important: don’t force the compartment, as you could break it and then it’s hopeless. The brewing needle in a Dolce Gusto® capsule machine is small, and can be broken, so don’t force it.
The best thing to do if you forget the capsule inside your coffee machine, is to make sure you lift the needle first and then try to pull it out VERY SLOWLY to remove the capsule.
Re-inject the needle if the capsule is still stuck and run the machine again, as if to brew another cup. When you run water again, the dried remains will soften, and you will be able to remove it without difficulty. However, put a glass underneath and don’t even think about drinking whatever comes out of it!
It is also never a bad idea to run a descaling solution through your machine. This will ensure all pipes are clear, and your coffee hot and fresh. Try our Caffenu Eco Descaler for an eco-friendly descaling solution.
The same can be said for ejecting capsules from Nespresso® machines. A coffee capsule won’t necessarily get stuck if you leave it in a Nespresso® machine (it’s possible), but it will get mouldy. Additionally, a capsule left in the brewing chamber will leave room for bacteria to colonise, as well as bad smells to arise. Although, bacteria and smells could arise in any capsule machine with a capsule left in it for too long!
If you do happen to forget a capsule in your machine for too long, it is highly recommended that you clean your Nespresso® machine before brewing your next coffee. It is, however, always good measure to give your machine a proper clean every now and then.
We covered the importance of ejecting coffee capsules from Dolce Gusto® and Nespresso® machines, but the same goes for any coffee capsule machine on the market. Whether it be a Keurig® K-cup® brewer, or a Lavazza® Blue®, it is generally a good idea to eject coffee capsules from the chamber, after brewing a coffee.
If you own a Nespresso® Original machine, you know it has many perks; the variety of drinks you can enjoy, including the compatible capsules they can brew. However, all is good and well, until a fault arises with the machine. If you ever brewed an unusually watery cup of coffee, then keep reading. Let’s see why a Nespresso® machine makes watery coffee.
Using refillable capsules is noble, and can save money, however, they can leak and cause coffee to be watery. This leakage is likely due to an incorrect coffee grind used in the capsule, causing poor extraction and leakage.
If you do use refillable capsules and experience watery coffee, you could try adjusting the grind of coffee used in the capsule until you find the leakage stops. Alternatively, you could test a regular capsule in the machine to see if that works.
If neither of the above stops the leakage, then you likely need to have your Nespresso® machine serviced.
Some compatible coffee capsules can cause leakage because of a design flaw in the capsule, and/or possible incorrect filling by the coffee capsule supplier/filler. A design flaw can cause water to bypass the capsule when brewing, making the water go around the capsule. The capsule could also not be pierced correctly, causing a poor, watery coffee extraction.
If you do use Nespresso® compatible coffee capsules and experience watery coffee, you might want to try an original Nespresso® capsule and see if that helps. If the leakage persists after trying an original capsule, then you need to have your machine serviced.
Lastly, a faulty mechanism in the machine could be the reason you’re drinking watery coffee. A fault may arise inside the machine itself, that could then lead to leakage. If you know that the coffee capsules you use are not the cause of your watery coffee, then you need to get your coffee machine repaired.
If you find yourself experiencing any other issues with your Nespresso® machine, then you can find solutions to any possible issue you have here. Don’t forget that you also need to give your machine a good clean every now and then!

Caffenu has recently received its official Intertek certification proving the quality and effectiveness of the Caffenu coffee machine cleaning product line and furthermore the safety in direct food contact applications! Intertek is a multinational inspection, product testing, and certification company that tested the Caffenu Range against high international standards.
The testing by Intertek was done on the following products: The Caffenu Eco Descaler, the Espresso Machine Cleaning Powder which is also used as an ingredient inside our Cleaning Capsule Range, our Milk System Cleaner, and Coffee Machine Cleaning Tablets. All test efforts came back with great results.
All above product lines were put through an extensive set of testing, and are now officially certified as safe for use as a cleaning agent in direct food contact applications. Caffenu has always ensured that our products, as well as their ingredients are safe for these applications, but receiving an official certificate once again reassures the safety and effectiveness of our cleaners and descalers to our consumers. All products are guaranteed to be safe for use with coffee machines, domestic and commercial.

It also assures our current and prospective clients and distributors that we follow a strict quality standards, and we are proud to develop products that are not only safe but also eco-friendly and effective.
Cleaning a coffee machine is vital for its performance and lifespan, as well as the quality of coffee it brews. We have previously posted about cleaning a Nespresso® Original machine and how you can do it. If you however own a Nespresso® Vertuo® machine, you might still be asking yourself how to clean it? Worry not, we are going to discuss Nespresso® Vertuo® Cleaning vs Nespresso® Original Cleaning.
Right now there is not many cleaning products available on the market for the Nespresso® Vertuo® aside from a descaler for limescale prevention/removal. The machine does however have a rinsing cycle “feature”, which flushes water out the machine. This flush cycle however lacks the required foaming action to remove hardened coffee oils and tannins. Until a cleaning capsule is available for the Vertuo® system, the water only flush cycle will unfortunately be your only option to flush out your machine.
You should also clean the externals of the machine with a soft, damp cloth and soak the drip tray, capsule basket, and water tank. Using the descaler will also ensure you prevent limescale and mineral build-up, keeping your machine in good working order to brew hot coffee.
Nespresso® Original capsule machines have a more intensive cleaning solution available. Original machines such as the Nespresso® Essenza®, Inissia® etc., have a convenient and easy-to-use cleaning capsule at hand.
The cleaning capsule has a unique foaming action which penetrates inaccessible parts of these machines, flushing out coffee residues and oils. This cleaning helps keep the machine working properly, bacteria away, and most importantly, your coffee fresh.
Like any other coffee machine, these machines also have to be descaled, keeping the limescale and mineral build-up at bay. The Nespresso® Original can easily be descaled without too many steps to follow, but always be sure to follow the usage instructions from both your machine manufacturer and the descaler instructions.
If you are in need of a cleaning routine for your Nespresso® Original machine, then you will find the best spring cleaning routine here. It will take you less than 5 minutes to enjoy a perfectly fresh cup of coffee!
Hopefully you now have a better understanding of Nespresso® Vertuo® cleaning vs Nespresso® Original cleaning! If not, contact us and we will be happy to assist.
The perks of having a capsule coffee machine like Nespresso® or Lavazza® are endless. You get to enjoy varieties of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate, all in the convenience of a capsule. These drinks, however, leave residue in your machine, but some drinks are worse than others. Here is the beverages that leave the worst residue in capsule coffee machines. But don’t you worry, we will also guide you in how to remove these nasty residues.
The arrival of capsule drinks like flavoured coffee and hot chocolate was warmly welcomed by the capsule coffee machine community. Drinks like these are great and make having a capsule machine more worthwhile.
However, they tend to leave a dominating residue behind after each brew, affecting the taste of the next coffee you brew. Drinks like hot chocolate can leave an even thicker layer in your machine’s brewing chamber and washer plate. The washer plate especially builds up the most dirt, causing bacteria build-up and machine malfunction when left untended.
Flavoured coffees, on the other hand, can leave behind a bit more oil than regular coffee, due to the flavouring that is added to the beans. More odour and flavouring will also be left to linger in your next brew.
Those that enjoy brewing certain teas might even find a slight discolouration between brews, how’s about a cup of green coffee? All jokes aside, the combination of tastes and colours in your favourite coffee would not be pleasant.
You might find yourself tempted to stop with the flavoured coffees and hot chocolates now, but that isn’t necessary. There is a cleaning solution that will allow you to continue enjoying all these drinks!
There is only one way in effectively removing the residues of drinks like flavoured coffee, and hot chocolate. It can be achieved through the unique and powerful foaming action of a cleaning capsule. The cleaning capsule can remove all beverage residue and oils from the brewing chamber and washer plate in just two minutes.
You might need to use two cleaning capsules if you haven’t cleaned your machine in a while, or at all. This is what comes out of your machine when using a Caffenu® cleaning capsule.
See? There’s no need to give up all the special drinks you enjoy brewing. All you need is to do some cleaning to prepare your machine for the next taste adventure!
