Having a coffee capsule machine is great; all the assortments of coffee you can enjoy at just the press of a button, but the coffee residue build-up left behind after each brew can certainly hinder the performance, and especially the taste of your coffee.
You think your coffee machine is clean inside? We made a video to show you what can come out of your coffee machine with a proper clean using a Caffenu® Cleaning Capsule. Watch it here:
As you can see, the Caffenu® Cleaning Capsule was specifically created to cleanse your coffee capsule machine from the inside out. Murky water loaded with old coffee residue is not something we want you to end up with in your next coffee. But that is exactly what clings to the inside of your coffee capsule machine, along with bacteria and aged coffee oils. The cleaning capsule is very easy to use and hygienically flushes out all the unwanted build-up from your machine, leaving you with that crystal-clear water, ensuring your next cup of coffee is perfectly fresh, as it should always be!
So, that begs the question, when last did you give your Nespresso® capsule machine a good clean? There has never been a better time than now.
And if you have another brand or type of coffee machine, worry not, we have you covered with various cleaning capsules suitable for various capsule machines, as well as an easy guide to cleaning other popular coffee machines such as bean to cup and espresso machines. Happy cleaning, happy coffee!
The recent global developments and the ongoing pandemic we find ourselves in have made one thing clear: Daily cleaning routines are now more important than ever. This applies to many areas of your life, and your kitchen and household appliances like your coffee machine should be included. After all, you use it on a daily basis and want to ensure you drink germ-free fresh coffee.
If you want to enjoy your next cup of coffee, you need daily cleaning routines to keep your equipment clean. Unfortunately, very often the wrong cleaners are used. Incorrect detergents and soaps leave residues, odours and deposits that should have no place in your next coffee or tea.
Should you have been made to believe that hot water and a bit of vinegar will do the trick, you are unfortunately on the wrong track. There is a reason we use soap to wash our hands. And a detergent when washing dishes. The detergent part is needed to break down oils and remove bacteria and germs from your hands, dishes, and your coffee machine needs this too.
The same applies for removing mineral and calcium deposits (the white stuff you see in your kettle). You need an acidic solution to break down the residue. Decalcifying your espresso machine just with vinegar isn’t effective enough and can leave a bad vinegar smell. Vinegar and coffee? Not recommended!
To make it easy for you, we wrote a guide on the best way to clean your coffee equipment, simply find your coffee machine type below. “I regret cleaning my coffee machine”, said no one ever, we promise! And protecting yourself and your favourite beverage has never been more important.
Here is your guide on the most popular coffee machines and how to clean them correctly…

Don’t think that your coffee machine will clean itself when you flush it out with water. Hot water alone does not break down coffee oils. Machines such as Nespresso®, Lavazza A Modo Mio®, Caffitaly® require two food safe cleaning processes:
Firstly, run a Caffenu® cleaning capsule at least once a month through your machine to properly clean the machine’s coffee brewing chamber and rest of the front end. Tip: Use the cleaning solution afterwards to soak your drip tray and capsule basket, works like a charm!
Secondly, descaling. The Caffenu® Eco Descaler cleans the back end of the coffee machine’s internals, removing harmful calcium, lime scale and mineral build up. The Eco descaler also has a natural antibacterial action to give a hygienic clean. Your machine will thank you with hotter coffee, too! Descale every 3 months or when descaling light comes on. For generic usage instructions on how to descale, see here.

Bean to cup machines require two cleaning processes, cleaning with tablets and descaling.
Step 1: The Caffenu® cleaning tablets, specifically the retail blister pack is perfect for home use to remove dirty old oils and odours and should be used at least once a month.
For detailed instructions on how to use the cleaning tablets in your machine, see here.
Step 2: The Caffenu® Eco Descaler removes lime scale and should be used according to the user manual instructions supplied by your machine’s manufacturer.
Descale every 3 months or when descaling light comes on. For generic usage instructions on how to descale, see here.
Optional Step 3: If your coffee machine also has a steam wand, clean it with a milk system cleaner.
The milk system cleaner removes sour milk residues and also sanitizes your equipment. Find more info on how to clean here.

Step 1 & Step 2: To clean bigger machines, you should use the appropriate size Caffenu® cleaning tablets in a jar, along with the Caffenu milk system cleaner to thoroughly clean the machine, and remove bitter tannins, coffee residues and oils. The tablets should be used once a week if you use your machine a lot or at least once a month. This will keep your machine clean and prevent misfunction but more importantly provide great coffee.

For detailed instructions on how to use the cleaning tablets in your machine, see here. The milk system cleaner should be used regularly (at least weekly) to prevent milk blockages and ensure hygienic milk circuits. General instructions on how to clean your automatic one touch milk circuit can be found here.
Step 3: Any coffee machine/hot water appliance needs descaling so be sure to familiarise yourself with the Caffenu® Eco Descaler.
Don’t worry though, descaling is only required every 3 months or so. However, please be aware that not every machine have a descaling light to alert you, so be sure to descale anyway!

Cleaning your commercial coffee machine requires the Caffenu® Cleaning Powder. The fast-acting, concentrated formula ensures removal of old coffee oils, build up and bitter tannins from your machine’s group heads, lines and valves. It is also ideal for soaking removable parts like portafilters, filter baskets and shower screens. The powder is great to use in your daily backflush cleaning routine.
The Caffenu Group Head Cleaning Brush is a multi-functional tool designed with an ergonomic handle and unique water deflector fins which keep your hand safe from hot water while cleaning your group head, shower screen and group seal. It also has an integrated measuring spoon for easy and convenient dosing of cleaning powder.
Take your milk jug/pitcher, and mix milk system cleaner at a 1 to 10 ratio with water in jug. Eg. if jug can hold 500 ml, pour 50 ml of milk cleaner into jug and fill the rest of the jug with warm water. Operate steam wand several times in jug filled with solution, then let steam wand and any other milk accessories you’d like to clean sit inside jug with solution for about 20min. Take steam wand out of jug and wipe down with a damp cloth. Then thoroughly rinse jug and other accessories and fill with clean water. To rinse, operate steam wand in clean water several times. This will ensure your one-way valve stays clean, protecting your boiler and getting rid of milk deposits inside steam wands which can cause blockages. The milk system cleaner also contains a sanitizer for a hygienic clean.
Having a coffee machine at home that makes premium and quality espresso is a non-negotiable for many coffee lovers – but when last did you clean your coffee machine?
All our kitchen appliances need regular cleaning, and that includes our coffee machines. The natural oils found in coffee beans leave an oily layer behind in the nozzle and spout of your machine, the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, which makes the coffee taste bitter. Even the water we use may leave behind calcium or other mineral deposits which can lead to colder coffee as the heating element gets blocked.
The good news is, unlike with most other cleaning in the kitchen, taking the right approach to cleaning your coffee machine is likely to be the easiest job of them all. Our new Descaling & Cleaning Kit compatible with original line Nespresso machines has got you covered. The eco descaler works on the backend of your coffee machine, removing lime scale, calcium and other mineral build up. The cleaning capsule covers the front parts of your coffee machine, the capsule removes old coffee oils and bacteria from the brewing chamber, spout and nozzle, all at the press of a button.

The Caffenu Descaling & Cleaning Kit therefore is an all in one cleaning solution. It comes with 100 ml of eco descaler, and four cleaning capsules compatible with original line Nespresso machines. Descaling and cleaning on a regular basis help to maintain the lifespan and function of your coffee machine. What’s even better, you’ll be back in no time as the specialist well-known to making that perfect cup of coffee, the perfect host.

I am sure the last thing you want to think about when pushing that coffee button waiting for it to pour is how the machine looks on the inside. But trust us when we say: You better start thinking about it. Most brewing chambers, nozzles and spouts of coffee machines can get very dirty, and full of build-up. But it is also what your eyes can’t see.
According to several studies performed on different brands of coffee makers, including KDKA-TV of Pittsburgh, coffee machines are a bacteria and mould reservoir. If you drink all that bacteria every morning, or possibly more than once a day with your cup of coffee, this could affect your health. This is particularly worrying for people whose immune system is not as strong. There are many conditions that can weaken your immunity: stress, depression, lack of sleep, bad eating habits, and many more.
The type of bacteria found in coffee machines are called ‘opportunist’, meaning they can be present on the body, but they won’t cause an infection as long as your immune system takes care of them. But then they take advantage at the exact moment your immunity gets weak, and they colonize your body.
Knowing all this, it’s pretty clear that growing all those microbes in your coffee maker is not a good idea. Many people get sick all the time and they don’t know why, not even thinking about the possibility that the problem might be in their coffee.
The logic answer would be to clean your coffee machine, but it’s not that simple. Traditional cleaning methods like running with plain hot water aren’t effective on coffee machines, as it’s very difficult to really get into every single space that could be growing bacteria, even after descaling it.
The perfect deep clean for your coffee machine is to wash it the same way you make coffee: With a pod. Caffenu’s cleaning pods received positive reviews from costumers all over the globe, claiming their coffee taste better and feels cleaner. The Caffenu cleaning capsules are compatible with the Nepresso system, and our Multipod is compatible with the Caffitaly, K-fee, Expressi, Verismo, and Tchibo Cafissimo system.

Cleaning is now as easy as making a cup of coffee. So you know not everything is lost, and you can get rid of that bacteria. Only have milk and sugar with your next coffee!
We believe the only thing more important than a perfect cup of coffee, is a healthy earth to enjoy it on. That’s why we’ve taken the liberty and developed an eco-friendly liquid that helps take care of our customers’ descaling needs. However, eco labelling is pretty vague. So, what exactly is it about the eco descaler that makes it eco-friendly?
A lot of commercial descaler products contain a chemical known as phosphate – a molecule of nitrogen and phosphorous. Phosphates are found in our food, our soaps, and in our cleaning supplies. Phosphates is something people didn’t worry about for a long time. That’s why we’ve grown so dependent on it. But now, researchers have realized that phosphates have a negative effect on the environment.
When we throw phosphate-containing products away or they seep down our drains, the phosphates end up in aquatic ecosystems. These include rivers, lakes, ponds, and even oceans. Mostly, phosphates promote excess growth in algae, which disrupts delicate ecosystems and upsets the predator/prey balance, and lessens water quality. It decreases oxygen in water (which our fish friends need to survive!), and obliterates valuable food resources and animal habitats.
As a result of these changes, we’re seeing outbreaks of illness and death in huge numbers of fish. Humans aren’t immune to these changes either, as the algae in the water can sometimes make the water toxic to us, as well as promote the growth of harmful bacteria that seek to make us sick.
This isn’t an easy problem to solve. Water clean-up across the globe needs to happen continually and remain monitored to make sure that these essential aquatic ecosystems stay healthy and as nature intended. There is one part that all of us can play though, and that’s reducing the amount of phosphate products we use. That’s why our eco descaler is important, and why we’ve made eco-friendliness a priority.
It’s a Sunday. You’ve got your liquid descaler and descale your coffee machine just before going to bed. When you wake up, you’ll have the best coffee you’ve had since you first got your coffee pod machine. You brew that cup of Joe and take a sip of that savoury wake-me-up. Oh no, it still tastes bitter.
Descaling is one crucial element of looking after your coffee equipment. A descaler works on the pump and pipes of your coffee machine, the back of the machine so to speak. It however doesn’t clean the brewing chamber and nozzle. That is where old coffee residue sits that blocks the nozzle and makes your coffee taste bitter and your coffee flow poor. To clean the brewing chamber of your coffee machine, use a cleaning capsule! Cleaning and descaling are two very different things.

What is a Cleaning Capsule? Cleaning your coffee machine is essential for both ensuring its longevity and the taste of your morning brew. Using Caffenu cleaning capsules will rid your machine of coffee oils and debris that accumulate over time from your coffee capsules. It is as easy as making a cup of coffee, you insert the capsule the same way. At the press of a button the capsule releases a unique foaming agent that foams up in the brewing chamber of your machine and removes old, bitter coffee residue.
What is Descaling then? Well, in order to get a piping hot roast just the way you like it, you need to remove a little thing called limescale. Limescale builds up from regular use of your coffee machine. It’s made up of all the natural minerals that are dissolved in water. When limescale builds up it prevents the heating elements from heating the water properly. If water isn’t heated to high enough temperatures before being filtered through the coffee grounds you end up with cold coffee. In order to clear off limescale and prevent it, you need to regularly use descaling liquid. See here how.
It’s recommended to use a cleaning capsule after every 30 cups of coffee made or at least once a month for best results. Descaling liquid should be used every 3 to 6 months depending on the water hardness in your area.
Truth is, you deserve the perfect cup every time. Look after your machine and it will look after you!
“Please, would you finally throw away that Nespresso coffee machine?” That is what my friends have been saying to me for the past year. Well, I am glad I didn’t! Truth is, yes, the machine was not working, it was making terrible sounds, the coffee tasted bitter, sometimes it had no reaction at all no matter which button I’d push. Until one little capsule changed all their minds.
My friends were shocked. To be quite honest, so was I. A cleaning capsule that would fix my whole machine sounded gimmicky. But it did the trick. One Caffenu cleaning capsule in there removed all the gunk that had been sitting inside the brewing chamber of the machine. The difference is huge. No more noises, no more bitterness, no more annoying friends trying to get me to part ways with my beloved Nespresso coffee machine.
As I know now, cleaning your coffee machine regularly is vital to the machine’s longevity and your coffee’s taste. My machine had gone so long without a cleaning that coffee residue and oils blocked the nozzle and chamber. The more I used it the worse it got. Which in my case is a lot. Can you blame me?
The Nespresso compatible cleaning capsules “clean” the machine and remove old coffee oils and bacteria. It’s important for the taste and cleanliness of your coffee, it’s effectively a toothbrush and toothpaste for your coffee machine!
Caffenu recommends that for the best flavour and health of your coffee machine, you should pop in a cleaning capsule once after every 30 coffee made, or at least once a month. They’re pretty cheap, too, considering it’s either use them or buy a new machine because I am definitely not living a coffee-free life.
Every 3 months you also descale your machine, but that is a liquid you put into your water tank, and it cleans something completely different. It removes lime scale, which is also important so your coffee stays hot!
All I can say is do yourself a favour (and flavour!) and clean your machine!
Do Nespresso® machines need cleaning? The answer is, YES, on a regular basis. Just like commercial and industrial machines, Nespresso® coffee machines collect odour, tannins and old coffee oils that get stuck in the brewing chamber of the machines. Every time you make a coffee, it leaves residue behind which hardens, and is a real feast for any bacteria. If you don’t remove this residue, it leads to blockage of the machine, bitter tasting coffee, and can also be a health risk. See more studies here.
That is great, and necessary, but descaling and cleaning are two completely different things and require different cleaning agents. Usually for descaling a very safe and healthy acid is used but a CLEANER requires a detergent.

A descaler enters your machine through the water tank, the back, and removes lime scale and calcium build-up from the boiler and the pipes. Descaling does not reach inaccessible areas in the BREWING chamber, and therefor is not a solution to blocked chambers and high bacteria levels on the nozzle and washer plate (basically where your coffee is brewed).
The Caffenu® cleaning capsule contains a unique foaming agent that foams up inside the brewing chamber, and binds dirty residue, oil and bacteria in those impossible to reach areas. With the rinsing process it flushes out all the things you don’t want in your next coffee, leaving you with better tasting coffee and a clean machine. More information on what exactly is being cleaned here.
Dormant machines are a perfect playground for any type of bacteria. The coffee oils have plenty of time to harden inside the brewing chamber. If you have not used your machine in a while, do yourself a favour, and clean it with the capsule before you make your next coffee.
That is great. Please keep it that way. The best time to start using the Caffenu® cleaning capsule is now, right after you bought the machine. Simply use a capsule after every thirty cups of coffee made and your machine will stay as good as new because you are not giving the machine a chance to build up blockages inside the brewing chamber, the pump can function properly, increasing the machine’s life span tremendously right from the get go.
Your health and safety is our utmost priority, so you will be glad to hear that the agent inside the Caffenu® cleaning capsule is made from food grade, organic, and readily biodegradable ingredients commonly found in most detergents (check the ingredients here). It completely dissolves after you have carried out the cleaning cycle. If you check your capsule after use, you will see that it is completely empty, and no traces of the cleaning agent will be found inside your machine, so no aftertaste is possible. The only thing you will gain is fresh better tasting coffee.
The truth is, they don’t. We have tested this about a million times by now. Our Caffenu® cleaning capsules are made from a food grade BPA free material, the melting point of which is above 230 degrees Celsius. The water temperature of a Nespresso® machine typically reaches 75-80 degrees Celsius, not even close to the melting point or the softening point of our cleaning capsules. Please also remember that a cleaning capsule is inherently different to a coffee capsule. Compared to coffee capsules, our cleaning capsule contains a soluble agent, which creates much less pressure build-up than regular coffee capsules. This leads to high performance in all Nespresso® machines. Slight deformation of the capsule may occur from time to time which is perfectly normal. This is due to high pressure within the brewing chamber of up to 19 bar. However nothing is ‘melting’ and this does not affect the effectiveness of the cleaning product.
Nespresso® solely specializes in coffee capsules. You may have noticed that the Nespresso® doesn’t manufacture their own descaler, the descaler is manufactured by De Longhi, and so are most Nespresso® coffee machines. The pure fact that Nespresso® doesn’t have a cleaning capsule, does not mean, it is not a great product to use.
In short: the Caffenu® cleaning capsule was specifically developed to improve Nespresso® machines, and not to damage them. Most machine break downs come from blockages. The Caffenu® cleaning capsule removes those blockages, so it generally improves the life span of Nespresso® coffee machines.
The Caffenu® cleaning capsule is inserted into the brewing chamber of the Nespresso® coffee machine, just like a coffee capsule. At the press of a button, the capsule releases a unique foaming agent that gets rid of all coffee oils, odours, tannins, and bacteria in just 2 minutes. It removes dirty residue from impossible to reach areas. Once the capsule is removed, press the large button twice to rinse the machine with water and voila: your machine is clean and your next coffee will be fresh.
Please also remember to descale your machine using Caffenu® eco descaler.
Only a clean machine makes the perfect coffee!
Nowadays, Nespresso® coffee machines have become one of the more favourable and popular coffee machines around the world. However, keeping it spotless on the inside has had its challenges. With all the new coffee flavours, hot chocolates and tea’s it is no secret that your coffee machine can’t be cleaned with conventional methods. The amount of oils, tannins and granules that build up in your chamber will cause problems like no flow, low flow or leakage because of all the back pressure.
But don’t fear, there is no need to dissemble your whole machine, now you can just insert the Caffenu cleaning capsule. It is the first cleaning capsule of its kind that cleans your machines brewing chamber immaculately with ultimate convenience. Caffenu cleaning capsules are the same size and shape as any Nespresso® compatible coffee capsules.
How does it work? The Caffenu capsule releases a powerful foaming agent inside the brewing chamber and discards all the coffee residue and odours in just 2 minutes, at the easy touch of a button. The contents inside the capsule contain biodegradable and organic materials, to keep your Nespresso® machine hygienically clean and as good as new. You will have no more problems with dirty and blocked brewing chambers.
100% compatible: The capsule was specifically developed for Nespresso® machines and has been tried and tested over 6 years. The melting point of the capsule is well above 200 degrees. The Caffenu cleaning capsule contains a soluble agent, which creates much less of a pressure build-up than regular coffee capsules. This leads to high performance in all Nespresso® machines. Most machine break downs come from blockages. The Caffenu® cleaning capsule removes those blockages, so it generally improves the life span of Nespresso® machines.
