The Nespresso® VertuoLine® System took the world by storm which does not come as a surprise. With its smart and sleek design, the Vertuo® intelligent extraction system recognises each Nespresso® pod and therefor has an overall easy-to-use functionality. The Nespresso® VertuoLine® coffee machine seems like it came straight from the future!
But even though easy to use, the Nespresso® Vertuo® coffee machine is not without its problems. In this blog, we troubleshoot some of the most common Nespresso® Vertuo® problems and issues users have run into and tell you how to fix them. Read on to identify your specific Vertuo® problem and have your Vertuo® running as good as new in no time.
Perform a Vertuo® cleaning procedure twice. We recommend using the Caffenu Cleaning Pods for Vertuo® to ensure optimal cleaning of your Vertuo® coffee machine. The pod flushes out old coffee residues, germs and rancid smells and tannins in just 1 minute.
This is to indicate that the machine needs descaling. You can only operate your Vertuo® a few times after the first time this happened before descaling becomes absolutely necessary so it is best to descale as soon as possible. We recommend using the Caffenu Eco Descaler for Vertuo®.
This could be a Vertuo® firmware update. If you recently connected your new Vertuo® coffee machine to the Nespresso® App, it might be going through a firmware update. To restart the coffee machine, disconnect the power cord from the outlet and after 10 seconds, plug the machine back and wait 3 minutes until the light becomes steady.
Your Vertuo® coffee machine has turned off automatically after 2 minutes of non-use to conserve energy. Simply push the button or unlock the machine.
The Vertuo® machine head is still unlocked. Move the lever further than the lock icon (or as far as it can go) on the lid to ensure that it is locked correctly.
The machine is still unlocked, or the capsule isn’t properly inserted. Check that the capsule is fitted correctly, and the machine is locked properly. If you are running a descaling cycle, check that no capsule was forgotten in the machine and the handle is properly locked.
Check that there is water in the Vertuo® tank and that the Vertuo® machine is properly locked.
It may be that you need to reset your machine. To reset your Vertuo® Plus®, follow the below steps.
Once you do this, the orange light will flash 3 times and turn steady orange.
This means that the machine is executing a user request to clean, descale or empty the system. If this is not what you intended, push the button to stop it and exit cleaning/descaling mode by holding the button for 7 seconds.
Check that the Vertuo® water tank is positioned correctly. You can also run a Caffenu Cleaning Pod for Vertuo® through your coffee machine to ensure the pipes are not blocked. Old coffee residue stuck inside the machine can also sometimes cause leaking or poor coffee flow. Your Vertuo® machine will be sparkly clean after the use of just one pod.
We hope this guide was able to help you with some of the most common issues experienced with Nespresso® Vertuo® coffee machines. For any other problems, consult your Vertuo® manual or machine manufacturer. Alternatively, contact us at [email protected].

Welcome to our step-by-step guide on how to use the Caffenu® Eco Power Descaler for Nespresso® Vertuo® machines. Descaling your Nespresso® machine is an important step in maintaining its optimal performance and ensuring the longevity of your machine. The Vertuo® Descaler® is specifically designed to remove built-up mineral deposits, which can negatively impact the taste of your coffee and even damage your machine over time.
In this guide, we will walk you through the entire descaling process, from preparing your machine to flushing out the descaling solution. With our easy-to-follow instructions, you’ll have your Nespresso® machine descaled and ready to brew delicious coffee in no time. So, let’s get started!
Important points to note before you start the descaling process:
Before Descaling: Have 800 ml (27.05 fl oz) of water ready, and a full bottle of 200 ml (6.75 fl oz) descaler.
Descaling time is ± 20 minutes.

Baristas and coffee lovers alike can agree that the ideal cappuccino or latte is served with perfectly textured and heated milk, which is achieved through the frothing and/or steaming of said milk. The taste and texture of the milk, on the other hand, are dependent on a well-maintained milk steamer or frother.
Milk circuits, steam wands, and frothers require regular cleaning due to the milk proteins and residue that can build up in and around the steam wand or frother. This build-up tends to cause blockages and leave nasty, sour-smelling milk on dairy equipment. Truthfully, no one even wants to imagine taking a first sip of a cappuccino and being hit with a foul smell that comes from old milk residue left in a frother.
Furthermore, old milk can harbor bacteria that could potentially have adverse effects on our health. This is certainly something to consider when serving milk-based drinks, whether in a commercial or home environment.
That is why cleaning and maintenance are essential; it keeps foul smells and build-up away while also assisting with the upkeep of diary equipment. Cleaning also helps keep bacteria at bay.
Caffenu provides baristas and coffee enthusiasts with the ultimate solutions for maintaining and cleaning steam wands, milk frothers, and other dairy equipment, including: An alkaline-based milk system cleaner and an acid-based milk system cleaner.
You might be asking what the differences between the two are. Essentially, it is the chemical make-up of the two, which slightly differs: one being an alkaline-based solution with a high pH and the other being acid-based with a low pH.
Both cleaners, acidic, and alkaline, serve as disinfectants that assist in hygienically cleaning the milk circuits and equipment.
You might also wonder which solution to use on what equipment. The truth is, either solution can be used on any dairy-based equipment. However, it is best practice to use what your machine’s manufacturer recommends; it may require both.
Coffee machines or milk systems that use hot water and/or steam to produce frothed milk would require an acidic milk system cleaner. This is especially the case where these machines are explicitly not descaled to remove limescale and rust build-up. Further, these machines are susceptible to limescale build-up as well as the milk proteins that accumulate in the milk circuit. A typical machine that could require acidic milk system cleaner, would be a commercial espresso machine’s steam wand and dairy components.
On the other hand, machines with systems that froth milk but have no water or steam come in contact with their milk circuit and/or components would require an alkaline-based solution. Also, this is because it is primarily milk proteins, fats, and oils that require breaking down, as opposed to the limescale that builds up from water/steam contact. Hence, there is no need for the acidic solution.
To conclude, the alkaline and the acidic milk system cleaners could be used with any dairy equipment, but each offers an active ingredient to serve its specific purpose.

Now, let’s get cleaning! If your Nespresso® Lattissima® has a “Clean” button, you can start there. Simply press the button and allow the machine to flush itself out. It is important to note that this does not deep clean your machine’s frother, but rather flushes out some blockage.

Remember, a little maintenance goes a long way in preventing future problems, that’s why we recommend regular cleaning & descaling. Love your coffee machine and it will love you back!
Descaling is a very important step in maintaining your coffee machine & ensuring you get a perfectly hot & fresh cup of coffee. Descaling isn’t just for your coffee machine though; we recommend regular descaling on kettles & urns as well to keep them in tip-top shape.
Before we start, we recommend that you descale your coffee machine, kettle or urn every 2 – 4 months depending on how many cups you have per month and the water hardness of your area.
To descale your coffee machine, it is best to consult your manufacturer’s instruction manual for descaling and rinsing procedures as the below are general instructions. Most machines have a descaling setting.
In addition to using the Caffenu Eco descaler, we recommend using a Caffenu Cleaning Capsule (for your specific machine). Additionally, we recommend cleaning tablets if you own a professional, and/or fully automatic/bean to cup machine. Doing so not only ensures optimal machine performance and maintenance, but also for your health and the perfect cup of coffee every time!

Have you ever splurged on some seriously good beans only to end up with a disappointing espresso? Its definitely happened to us! But don’t worry, here are 3 common mistakes to avoid when making your next cuppa, ensuring you end up with the freshest, smoothest coffee in town!
1. The Freshness of the Coffee
The first mistake most people make when trying to create the perfect espresso at home is not using freshly roasted or ground coffee. Coffee begins to oxidize or “age” once roasted. Most professional baristas agree that coffee is at its best 2 – 5 days after being roasted. However, you can still use them, ideally, between 7 and 14 days when properly sealed and stored. The fresher the coffee, the richer the taste! It is also advised to ground the exact quantity necessary for the number of cups you are about to brew. This is because subtle aromatic compounds of coffee start deteriorating minutes after grinding.
2. The milk
We do not recommend using low-fat milk for frothing, as it will leave you with milk filled with bubbles and no texture, which will result in a less smooth, unbalanced coffee. It will not be as rich or sweet, which could be why your lattes and cappuccinos sometimes feel like a flop.
3. Not Cleaning Your Machine
Cleaning your machine is one of the most important but most often overlooked parts of owning an espresso machine. Daily and weekly cleaning & maintenance are essential for your coffee machine’s longevity & to ensure the perfect cup of coffee. We recommend using the Caffenu Cleaning Powder or the Caffenu Tablets Blister to ensure the internal components of your machine stay sparkly clean & fresh while the Caffenu Milk System Cleaner will help keep bacteria at bay when it comes to your built-in steam wand.
