Sanitize and keeping it clean, that is now more important than ever. You have probably seen this build-up at the bottom of your kettle before?

This comes from the high concentration of calcium in some of the water we use. In order to test the efficiency of sanitizing products, we took this old kettle with an impressive build-up of limescale and decided to put our Caffenu® Eco Descaler to the test!

The results were overwhelming (all the build-up stuff is gone!): a limescale-free, sanitized kettle. Now just think about this: The surface of your kettle is visible, you can actually see the build-up, but what about the inside of your coffee machine? There are places we simply can’t see, where heat and moisture are present. Those places build up that exact limescale, as well as coffee residues and bacteria.

It isn’t a fun thing to consider, but coffee machines do build up some foul mess, and that’s why it is essential to give your coffee machine a thorough cleaning every now and then, too; to avoid the potentially harmful substances that build up in your precious machine, and ensure you always get a perfect cup of coffee!

Please remember, also use a cleaning capsule on your machine (if available) or a cleaning tablet, as it is just as important as descaling. Here is a complete guide on how to clean which specific coffee machine.

Please, keep it clean!

The recent global developments and the ongoing pandemic we find ourselves in have made one thing clear: Daily cleaning routines are now more important than ever. This applies to many areas of your life, and your kitchen and household appliances like your coffee machine should be included. After all, you use it on a daily basis and want to ensure you drink germ-free fresh coffee.

If you want to enjoy your next cup of coffee, you need daily cleaning routines to keep your equipment clean. Unfortunately, very often the wrong cleaners are used. Incorrect detergents and soaps leave residues, odours and deposits that should have no place in your next coffee or tea.

Should you have been made to believe that hot water and a bit of vinegar will do the trick, you are unfortunately on the wrong track. There is a reason we use soap to wash our hands. And a detergent when washing dishes. The detergent part is needed to break down oils and remove bacteria and germs from your hands, dishes, and your coffee machine needs this too.

The same applies for removing mineral and calcium deposits (the white stuff you see in your kettle). You need an acidic solution to break down the residue. Decalcifying your espresso machine just with vinegar isn’t effective enough and can leave a bad vinegar smell. Vinegar and coffee? Not recommended!

To make it easy for you, we wrote a guide on the best way to clean your coffee equipment, simply find your coffee machine type below. “I regret cleaning my coffee machine”, said no one ever, we promise! And protecting yourself and your favourite beverage has never been more important.

Here is your guide on the most popular coffee machines and how to clean them correctly…

Clean your capsule coffee machine

Recommendation: Clean with a capsule, and descale!

Don’t think that your coffee machine will clean itself when you flush it out with water. Hot water alone does not break down coffee oils. Machines such as Nespresso®, Lavazza A Modo Mio®, Caffitaly® require two food safe cleaning processes:

Firstly, run a Caffenu® cleaning capsule at least once a month through your machine to properly clean the machine’s coffee brewing chamber and rest of the front end. Tip: Use the cleaning solution afterwards to soak your drip tray and capsule basket, works like a charm!

Secondly, descaling. The Caffenu® Eco Descaler cleans the back end of the coffee machine’s internals, removing harmful calcium, lime scale and mineral build up. The Eco descaler also has a natural antibacterial action to give a hygienic clean. Your machine will thank you with hotter coffee, too! Descale every 3 months or when descaling light comes on. For generic usage instructions on how to descale, see here.

Clean your bean to cup, home espresso and filter machines

Recommendation: Clean with a tablet, and descale!

Bean to cup machines require two cleaning processes, cleaning with tablets and descaling.

Step 1: The Caffenu® cleaning tablets, specifically the retail blister pack is perfect for home use to remove dirty old oils and odours and should be used at least once a month.

For detailed instructions on how to use the cleaning tablets in your machine, see here.

Step 2: The Caffenu® Eco Descaler removes lime scale and should be used according to the user manual instructions supplied by your machine’s manufacturer.

Descale every 3 months or when descaling light comes on. For generic usage instructions on how to descale, see here.

The milk system cleaner removes sour milk residues and also sanitizes your equipment. Find more info on how to clean here.

Clean your fully or super automatic coffee machine incl. milk system

Recommendation: Clean with a tablet, use a milk system cleaner for milk circuit and descale.

Step 1 & Step 2: To clean bigger machines, you should use the appropriate size Caffenu® cleaning tablets in a jar, along with the Caffenu milk system cleaner to thoroughly clean the machine, and remove bitter tannins, coffee residues and oils. The tablets should be used once a week if you use your machine a lot or at least once a month. This will keep your machine clean and prevent misfunction but more importantly provide great coffee.

For detailed instructions on how to use the cleaning tablets in your machine, see here. The milk system cleaner should be used regularly (at least weekly) to prevent milk blockages and ensure hygienic milk circuits. General instructions on how to clean your automatic one touch milk circuit can be found here.

Step 3: Any coffee machine/hot water appliance needs descaling so be sure to familiarise yourself with the Caffenu® Eco Descaler.

Don’t worry though, descaling is only required every 3 months or so. However, please be aware that not every machine have a descaling light to alert you, so be sure to descale anyway!

Clean your commercial manual or semi-automatic espresso machine

Recommendation: Clean with powderuse a milk system cleaner and group head brush.

Cleaning your commercial coffee machine requires the Caffenu® Cleaning Powder. The fast-acting, concentrated formula ensures removal of old coffee oils, build up and bitter tannins from your machine’s group heads, lines and valves. It is also ideal for soaking removable parts like portafilters, filter baskets and shower screens. The powder is great to use in your daily backflush cleaning routine.

Weekly cleaning of filters, handles, holders, trays, cups etc:

The Caffenu Group Head Cleaning Brush is a multi-functional tool designed with an ergonomic handle and unique water deflector fins which keep your hand safe from hot water while cleaning your group head, shower screen and group seal. It also has an integrated measuring spoon for easy and convenient dosing of cleaning powder.

Weekly cleaning of steam wands, milk foaming devices, milk jugs and thermometers etc:

Caffenu milk system cleaner for all coffee machines and dairy equipment product displayTake your milk jug/pitcher, and mix milk system cleaner at a 1 to 10 ratio with water in jug. Eg. if jug can hold 500 ml, pour 50 ml of milk cleaner into jug and fill the rest of the jug with warm water. Operate steam wand several times in jug filled with solution, then let steam wand and any other milk accessories you’d like to clean sit inside jug with solution for about 20min. Take steam wand out of jug and wipe down with a damp cloth. Then thoroughly rinse jug and other accessories and fill with clean water. To rinse, operate steam wand in clean water several times. This will ensure your one-way valve stays clean, protecting your boiler and getting rid of milk deposits inside steam wands which can cause blockages. The milk system cleaner also contains a sanitizer for a hygienic clean.

The thing about winter is that it gives us shorter day hours and we tend to do a little less in keeping things in order around our homes. Traditionally, people use spring as a way to change gears and getting things back in order around the house.

But have you ever thought about cleaning your coffee machine? We promise, it is so easy to spring clean your coffee capsule machine with Caffenu.

Caffenu makes sure to remove hardened oils, tannins, and debris out of your machine which can affect your coffee taste most of all. By spring cleaning you can make sure that you get the perfect cup of coffee every time, fresher as ever. The dirtiest part of your machine that probably needs the most attention is the washer plate. The Caffenu cleaning capsules work specifically on cleaning this part of the brewing chamber. Tip: Use the cleaning solution to soak your drip tray, basket and water tank. The eco descaler on the other hand removes lime scale and calcium build-up on the back of your machine, the pipes and boiler. Read more about the difference between cleaning and descaling here. We recommend using both methods regularly, even if you are not an avid coffee drinker.

Once your coffee machine is clean on the inside out, sit down and relax. You can be assured that your next cup of coffee will be pure and absolutely delicious.

Do Nespresso® machines need cleaning? The answer is, YES, on a regular basis. Just like commercial and industrial machines, Nespresso® coffee machines collect odour, tannins and old coffee oils that get stuck in the brewing chamber of the machines. Every time you make a coffee, it leaves residue behind which hardens, and is a real feast for any bacteria. If you don’t remove this residue, it leads to blockage of the machine, bitter tasting coffee, and can also be a health risk. See more studies here.

But I descale my machine

That is great, and necessary, but descaling and cleaning are two completely different things and require different cleaning agents. Usually for descaling a very safe and healthy acid is used but a CLEANER requires a detergent.

difference between cleaning and descaling your nespresso coffee machine

A descaler enters your machine through the water tank, the back, and removes lime scale and calcium build-up from the boiler and the pipes. Descaling does not reach inaccessible areas in the BREWING chamber, and therefor is not a solution to blocked chambers and high bacteria levels on the nozzle and washer plate (basically where your coffee is brewed).

The Caffenu® cleaning capsule contains a unique foaming agent that foams up inside the brewing chamber, and binds dirty residue, oil and bacteria in those impossible to reach areas. With the rinsing process it flushes out all the things you don’t want in your next coffee, leaving you with better tasting coffee and a clean machine. More information on what exactly is being cleaned here.

But I don’t use my machine that often

Dormant machines are a perfect playground for any type of bacteria. The coffee oils have plenty of time to harden inside the brewing chamber. If you have not used your machine in a while, do yourself a favour, and clean it with the capsule before you make your next coffee.

But my machine is brand new

That is great. Please keep it that way. The best time to start using the Caffenu® cleaning capsule is now, right after you bought the machine. Simply use a capsule after every thirty cups of coffee made and your machine will stay as good as new because you are not giving the machine a chance to build up blockages inside the brewing chamber, the pump can function properly, increasing the machine’s life span tremendously right from the get go.

But a chemical is not safe and will leave aftertaste

Your health and safety is our utmost priority, so you will be glad to hear that the agent inside the Caffenu® cleaning capsule is made from food grade, organic, and readily biodegradable ingredients commonly found in most detergents (check the ingredients here). It completely dissolves after you have carried out the cleaning cycle. If you check your capsule after use, you will see that it is completely empty, and no traces of the cleaning agent will be found inside your machine, so no aftertaste is possible. The only thing you will gain is fresh better tasting coffee.

But plastic coffee capsules will melt in my machine

The truth is, they don’t. We have tested this about a million times by now. Our Caffenu® cleaning capsules are made from a food grade BPA free material, the melting point of which is above 230 degrees Celsius. The water temperature of a Nespresso® machine typically reaches 75-80 degrees Celsius, not even close to the melting point or the softening point of our cleaning capsules. Please also remember that a cleaning capsule is inherently different to a coffee capsule. Compared to coffee capsules, our cleaning capsule contains a soluble agent, which creates much less pressure build-up than regular coffee capsules. This leads to high performance in all Nespresso® machines. Slight deformation of the capsule may occur from time to time which is perfectly normal. This is due to high pressure within the brewing chamber of up to 19 bar. However nothing is ‘melting’  and this does not affect the effectiveness of the cleaning product.

Nespresso® only sells descaler, so I don’t need a capsule to clean my machine

Nespresso® solely specializes in coffee capsules. You may have noticed that the Nespresso® doesn’t manufacture their own descaler, the descaler is manufactured by De Longhi, and so are most Nespresso® coffee machines. The pure fact that Nespresso® doesn’t have a cleaning capsule, does not mean, it is not a great product to use.

In short: the Caffenu® cleaning capsule was specifically developed to improve Nespresso® machines, and not to damage them. Most machine break downs come from blockages. The Caffenu® cleaning capsule removes those blockages, so it generally improves the life span of Nespresso® coffee machines.

How do I use the Caffenu® cleaning capsule?

Caffenu original formula cleaning capsules for nespresso original line coffee machines product displayThe Caffenu® cleaning capsule is inserted into the brewing chamber of the Nespresso® coffee machine, just like a coffee capsule. At the press of a button, the capsule releases a unique foaming agent that gets rid of all coffee oils, odours, tannins, and bacteria in just 2 minutes. It removes dirty residue from impossible to reach areas. Once the capsule is removed, press the large button twice to rinse the machine with water and voila: your machine is clean and your next coffee will be fresh.

Please also remember to descale your machine using  Caffenu® eco descaler.

Does your Nespresso® coffee machine give you more issues than coffee?

We have all been there. We crawl out of bed, switch on our beloved coffee machine, and push the button so that we can finally start the day with the help of a good cup of coffee. But something isn’t right…

Oh my word, I hear you thinking. Now I have to take it in for a very expensive service, and will be without coffee for weeks until they can figure out what is wrong with my Nespresso® machine.

Hold on! Your Nespresso® machine might just need a proper clean!

Most of machine failures or poor performance issues are caused by blockages in the brewing chamber of your coffee machine. This is the part where your coffee gets brewed, so every time you make a coffee, a layer of coffee oil stays behind. These oily residues dry out, and can literally block the entire washer plate of your coffee machine.

Leah Armstrong saved her Nespresso® machine

“Our Nespresso® machine stopped working, the coffee came out drop by drop so we figured it’s time for it to retire. I really don’t like just throwing things away though, so did some research and found the Caffenu® cleaning capsules. We ran a few cleaning capsules through because the machine was REALLY bad. After a long reverential silence at what came out, we made a coffee and the machine worked! It just needed a good clean all along. And now we clean our machine regularly.”

Cleaning capsules to the rescue

The Caffenu® cleaning capsules are specifically designed to remove old coffee oils, build-up and blockages from the brewing chamber of your coffee machine. Hot water flushes or other cleaning methods such as descaling do not solve the issue. The cleaning capsule releases a unique foaming agent that gets into all the nucks and grannies inside your machine. Next time your Nespresso® machine is playing up, just think Caffenu®. Only a clean machine, makes the perfect coffee!

Do you realize what goes on inside your Nespresso® coffee machine?

Every time you extract a shot of espresso, a layer of coffee oil stays behind inside the brewing chamber of your machine. Today we want to talk about the dirtiest part inside your Nespresso® coffee machine. It is not the water tank, or the pipes, it is the washer plate!

What is the washer plate?

The washer plate in your Nespresso® coffee machine is a vital part of the brewing process. You can think of it as the filter in your machine. It has many tiny holes in it almost like the shower head in your shower, only much smaller thus the name washer plate.

This is where the front part or the foil lid of your coffee capsule sits up against. When you press your button for your favorite coffee the pressure builds up inside the capsule which then pushes the foil lid up against the washer plate’s raised profile.

caffenu clean vs descale

When the pressure is correct, the foil bursts and the coffee gets extracted through the tiny holes in the washer plate which then pass through the spout which leads into the nozzle and finally into your cup.

The dirtiest part of your Nespresso® coffee machine

So the truth is, every time you make a coffee, it needs to pass through the tiny holes in the washer plate. This is great when it is all nice and clean to brew your perfect cup of coffee, but unfortunately this is not always the case. Below you can see an image of a normal cleaned washer plate (left) and a blocked washer plate (right). On the blocked washer plate there is barely space or holes for the coffee to pass through due to all the build-up. You can still see all the coffee residue that is blocking the holes.

dirty clean washer plateIf you don´t clean your brewing chamber regularly, this will ultimately happen and your machine might stop working. This gradual blockage can stress and damage your machine. But even worse, a blocked washer plate is also the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. All your coffee gets filtered and then passes through this dirty washer plate which spoils the flavor and aroma of your coffee.

With the advent of other beverages like hot chocolate and tea’s which can cause excessive build up, this problem will only get worse. Fortunately the solution is easy by regularly using Caffenu’s cleaning capsules with its unique foaming action and powerful cleansing action which works to break down build up in inaccessible area’s. The capsule removes residue in just 2 minutes from your washer plate, clears the holes and cleans the whole spout and brewing chamber of your machine.

The best way to prevent blocked and dirty Nespresso® machines is to start using the Caffenu® cleaning capsules right from the beginning, so from new, to keep your machine clean and ensuring you get the perfect cup every time.

How to brew the perfect cup of coffee – with your Nespresso® machine

How temperatures, water and your coffee capsule machine all influence the quality of your coffee. Here are our Top 5 Tips:

1. Preheat your cup

pre-heat your coffee cupYes, you heard us! It is very important to preheat your cup for the perfect cup of coffee, before you brew your coffee pod. A cold cup will not only affect the temperature of your coffee, but also the coffee flavour.

Thankfully, there is an easy way to preheat your cup if you have a Nespresso® coffee machine. Simply run your machine without a capsule inside (just hot water). Swirl the hot water around in your cup, discard water. Cup is heated and ready for coffee in only a few seconds!

2. Remove bacteria

remove bacteria from your coffee machine Did you know that professional baristas clean their coffee equipment every single day? There is a reason for that. Coffee is a very oily beverage. Every time you extract a shot of espresso it leaves a layer of oil and residue behind in your Nespresso® machine.

Bacteria can feed on the old coffee oils and build-up inside your machine. Use a Caffenu® cleaning capsule once a month to get rid of any residue. Simply insert the cleaning capsule like a coffee capsule. Put a large container underneath the spout to run the cleaning solution into. Run, rinse twice and your’re good to go.

3. Clean & soak

soak removable partsClean all parts of your coffee machine to ensure a clean and bacteria-free machine, and get the best-tasting coffee. Soak your drip tray, capsule basket, and water tank as part of a spring cleaning routine.

Use the cleaning solution that is left over after using a cleaning capsule. Soak all removable parts in the solution for 10 minutes. Gently scrub and rinse the parts after soaking.

4. Descale your machine

descale regularlyDescaling is the not the same as using a cleaning capsule. The cleaning capsule gets rid of old coffee oils in the brewing chamber of your machine. The descaler removes limescale from the boiler and thermoblock, and pipes of your machine. Limescale can contribute to poor-tasting and cold coffee, so be sure to keep it away.

Descaling is only necessary every 3-6 months, depending on how hard the water is that you use to make the coffee. Regular descaling makes sure that your coffee tastes great every single time, and also keeps your Nespresso® machine in great condition.

5. Use fresh filtered water

use fresh filtered waterStale water can affect the taste of your coffee. Avoid stale-tasting coffee by keeping your water clean and fresh. Change the water inside your water tank frequently. Rinse and refill the tank, if possible with fresh, filtered water.

Also: if you are using tap water in your coffee machine, it is very likely that you need to descale your machine more often due to the lime and calcium build-up that ends up in your coffee machine.

Enjoy making your perfect up of coffee!

Are you aware, that your coffee machine is a breeding ground for bacteria and old coffee build up? The residue and build-up mainly sits inside the brewing chamber and nozzle of your machine.

Descaling doesn´t help

Descaling doesn´t hurt, but it doesn´t help. A descaler only removes the lime scale on the boiler of your machine (the white stuff you see in your kettle). But it doesn´t have the required foaming agent or pressure build-up to remove residue and bacteria on the brewing chamber of your machine.

If you don´t clean the brewing chamber of your machine, it cannot only affect the taste of your coffee, but more importantly your health! Shocking stats about dirty Nespresso® machines revealed here.

Use a Cleaning Capsule for best results

The Caffenu® cleaning capsule was specifically designed to clean the brewing chamber of your Nespresso® coffee machine. The capsule releases a powerful foaming agent that gets rid of residue build-up and bacteria in just 2 minutes. It is therefor different to a descaler which only removes lime scale on the boiler of your machine.

Recommended by Award-Winning Baristas: Any Barista will tell you that only a healthy coffee machine, can make the perfect coffee! You cannot expect your coffee to taste exceptional, if you are using equipment which hasn´t been cleaned.

Use One Capsule After Every 30 Cups

Use one cleaning capsule after every 30 cups, or at least once a month for best results. Descaling is only required every 3-6 months, depending on the water hardness.

Try our Descaling and Cleaning Kit to combine descaling and cleaning for your machine.

Happy machine, happy coffee. Caffenu®!

A customer returned their Nespresso ® coffee machine to our offices last week, a CitiZ Nespresso ® machine. He said there was poor flow, the machine was dripping and the coffee had a funny taste. It was all together not a good coffee experience.

dirty CitiZ Nespresso machineOnce our technicians opened up the coffee machine, we could tell the customer exactly why. Look at how much dirt and build-up is in this Nespresso ® coffee machine. You can see residue from coffee oils, and tea as well. The worst thing though is what you don´t see: the bacteria that sits on there which can cause serious health issues if you are still drinking the coffee.

Please, don´t let it get that bad!

The Caffenu® Cleaning Capsule was specifically developed to keep your machine in good shape. The specifically formulated foaming agent is released directly inside the brewing chamber and nozzle of your machine, flushing out dirt, bacteria and old coffee residue. It goes into inaccessible areas that cannot be cleaned by your usual cleaning procedure, not even by descaling your machine.

The best time to start cleaning your machine is now, or straight after you bought it

If you take good care of the equipment, the equipment will take good care of you by giving you the coffee experience you deserve. You also increase the lifespan of your machine by cleaning it regularly, so you can drink delicious coffee for longer!

Here is to clean and fresh coffee! Clean your machine.
