Have you ever noticed that your coffee maker or kettle isn’t performing as efficiently as it once did? Maybe it’s taking longer to brew coffee or heat water. If this sounds familiar, you might need a descaling solution.

Descaling is the process of removing mineral deposits, primarily calcium and magnesium, that can accumulate inside appliances like coffee makers, kettles, and even dishwashers. There are two common descaling products on the market: descaling liquid and descaling tablets.

In this blog, we’ll explore the key differences between these two options to help you make an informed decision on which one is right for your needs.

Descaling Liquid

Descaling liquid is a popular choice for those looking to rid their appliances of mineral build-up. It typically comes in a 200ml bottle, providing two descaling cycles. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of using descaling liquid:

Advantages:

  1. Versatility: Descaling liquid is versatile and can be used in various appliances, including coffee makers, kettles, dishwashers, and even steam irons. This versatility makes it a go-to solution for many households.
  2. Ease of use: Using descaling liquid is straightforward. You mix the liquid with water in a specific ratio, run the solution through your appliance, and then rinse thoroughly. This process is relatively simple and can be done with minimal effort.
  3. Fast-acting: Descaling liquids are often designed to work quickly, effectively breaking down mineral deposits and limescale in a short amount of time.

Disadvantages:

  1. Storage: Liquid descaling solutions may take up more space.
  2. Spillage: There is a chance that liquid descaler can be spilt, whereas tablets won’t.

Descaling Tablets

Descaling tablets are an alternative to descaling liquid, but also an easy-to-use solution. These tablets are specially designed to remove limescale and mineral build-up efficiently. Here’s a closer look at the pros and cons of using descaling tablets:

Advantages:

  1. Precise dosing: Tablets are pre-measured, ensuring that you use the correct amount of descaling agent each time. This eliminates the need for measuring and mixing, making the process more straightforward.
  2. Compact and easy to store: Descaling tablets are compact, taking up less space in your storage area, and are less likely to spill or leak.

Disadvantages:

  1. Limited appliance compatibility: Descaling tablets are designed for bigger coffee machines.
  2. Slightly longer process: While descaling tablets are still relatively quick, they may take a bit longer to dissolve and work compared to liquid descaler.
  3. Costly: Descaling tablets tend to cost more than descaling liquid, as they go through a more intricate production.

Which One Should You Choose?

The choice between descaling liquid and descaling tablets ultimately depends on your specific needs and preferences. Here are some factors to consider:

  1. Appliance compatibility: If you have multiple appliances that require descaling, descaling liquid may be a more versatile option.
  2. Convenience: If you prefer a quick and straightforward descaling process, descaling tablets, with their pre-measured doses, could be the right choice.

Conclusion

Descaling is an essential maintenance task to keep your coffee machine running efficiently and to extend its lifespan. Whether you choose descaling liquid or descaling tablets, both options are effective at removing mineral deposits and limescale. Your decision should be based on factors like appliance compatibility, cost, and personal preference.

Regular descaling will help ensure your machine continues to perform at its best and provide you with great-tasting coffee, tea, and more.

The Nespresso® VertuoLine® System took the world by storm which does not come as a surprise. With its smart and sleek design, the Vertuo® intelligent extraction system recognises each Nespresso® pod and therefor has an overall easy-to-use functionality. The Nespresso® VertuoLine® coffee machine seems like it came straight from the future!

But even though easy to use, the Nespresso® Vertuo® coffee machine is not without its problems. In this blog, we troubleshoot some of the most common Nespresso® Vertuo® problems and issues users have run into and tell you how to fix them. Read on to identify your specific Vertuo® problem and have your Vertuo® running as good as new in no time.

There are coffee grounds left in the cup

Perform a Vertuo® cleaning procedure twice. We recommend using the Caffenu Cleaning Pods for Vertuo® to ensure optimal cleaning of your Vertuo® coffee machine. The pod flushes out old coffee residues, germs and rancid smells and tannins in just 1 minute.

The light alternately blinks 3 times when turned on.

This is to indicate that the machine needs descaling. You can only operate your Vertuo® a few times after the first time this happened before descaling becomes absolutely necessary so it is best to descale as soon as possible. We recommend using the Caffenu Eco Descaler for Vertuo®.

The Vertuo® light is blinking or flashing white

This could be a Vertuo® firmware update. If you recently connected your new Vertuo® coffee machine to the Nespresso® App, it might be going through a firmware update. To restart the coffee machine, disconnect the power cord from the outlet and after 10 seconds, plug the machine back and wait 3 minutes until the light becomes steady.

There’s no light on the button

Your Vertuo® coffee machine has turned off automatically after 2 minutes of non-use to conserve energy. Simply push the button or unlock the machine.

The Vertuo® light blinks orange then goes back to white

The Vertuo® machine head is still unlocked. Move the lever further than the lock icon (or as far as it can go) on the lid to ensure that it is locked correctly.

The Vertuo® machine doesn’t start and has a blinking light

The machine is still unlocked, or the capsule isn’t properly inserted. Check that the capsule is fitted correctly, and the machine is locked properly. If you are running a descaling cycle, check that no capsule was forgotten in the machine and the handle is properly locked.

The machine doesn’t start; the light blinks alternately; 1 blink and 1 pause

Check that there is water in the Vertuo® tank and that the Vertuo® machine is properly locked.

Light displays half orange, and the other half yellow (Vertuo® Plus® specific)

It may be that you need to reset your machine. To reset your Vertuo® Plus®, follow the below steps.

  1. Remove any capsules from the machine.
  2. Press the “Lever” down for 3 seconds to turn OFF the machine.
  3. Push the “Coffee” button and “Lever” simultaneously and hold them for 3 seconds. The orange light will display.
  4. Then push the lever down 3 times, and press the “Coffee” button once.

Once you do this, the orange light will flash 3 times and turn steady orange.

The light blinks while the machine is running but only water is being dispensed

This means that the machine is executing a user request to clean, descale or empty the system. If this is not what you intended, push the button to stop it and exit cleaning/descaling mode by holding the button for 7 seconds.

The Machine is leaking or the coffee flow is unusual

Check that the Vertuo® water tank is positioned correctly. You can also run a Caffenu Cleaning Pod for Vertuo® through your coffee machine to ensure the pipes are not blocked. Old coffee residue stuck inside the machine can also sometimes cause leaking or poor coffee flow. Your Vertuo® machine will be sparkly clean after the use of just one pod.

We hope this guide was able to help you with some of the most common issues experienced with Nespresso® Vertuo® coffee machines. For any other problems, consult your Vertuo® manual or machine manufacturer. Alternatively, contact us at [email protected].

We understand the frustration that comes from trying to brew your morning cappuccino only to find that your Nespresso® Lattissima® produces little to no milk foam. That is not the way to start a morning, but don’t worry! The Caffenu® Milk System Cleaner makes this an easy fix, and you will have your morning cuppa in no time!

It is likely that there’s some milk residue present. Not only can this clog up your milk system with sour milk, but it also provides the ideal environment for bacteria and germs to breed and thrive. We don’t even want to get into the old, smelly milk particles that may be present in your coffee! Gross!

Now, let’s get cleaning! If your Nespresso® Lattissima® has a “Clean” button, you can start there. Simply press the button and allow the machine to flush itself out. It is important to note that this does not deep clean your machine’s frother, but rather flushes out some blockage.

Next, you will need the Caffenu® Milk System Cleaner. Follow these steps:

  1. Create the cleaning solution in a container or directly in the milk container: Mix 50 ml of the Caffenu® Milk System Cleaner with 500 ml of cold water (if you have a smaller milk container, follow the 10:1 ratio, for example, if your milk system container is only 300 ml, add 30ml solution to 300 ml cold water).
  2. Insert the suction tube into the container with the cleaning solution
  3. Run the solution through the milk circuit.
  4. Repeat the process with clean cold water to thoroughly rinse all components.

As an extra measure, after completing the rinsing process, you can also disassemble the milk system and other accessories and wash the pieces either by hand or in a dishwasher. We also recommend regular cleaning & descaling maintenance to keep your Nespresso® Lattissima® in tip-top shape. The Caffenu® Nespresso® Compatible Descaling & Cleaning Kit is the perfect solution for monthly maintenance.

You may have a coffee obsession and want to buy a coffee machine, but you’re not sure where to begin or what to look out for. Because let’s face it, there are hundreds of coffee machine types on the market.

Before you decide to buy a coffee machine, consider a few factors that will determine whether the coffee maker will fulfil your actual needs. Coffee machines are used by certain coffee drinkers to brew coffee at home, at work, at restaurants, and in cafés. Furthermore, whatever you intend to use your coffee machine for, you need to ensure that it meets your expectations.

Here are the Top 4 Things you need to check before buying a coffee machine:

1. Type of Machine

Coffee enthusiasts can choose from a variety of coffee machines, each with its own set of features and functionality:

Capsule Coffee Machine – The ultimate convenience to make professional coffee at home within seconds. Simply insert a coffee pod, enjoy. This is perfect for convenience coffee lovers who want a good cup on the go.

Bean To Cup – A bean to cup machine grinds beans fresh to preserve the flavour of oils in the beans. Perfect for office settings where 5 or more people make coffee at the same time.

Manual Espresso – Looking to get more involved in actual coffee making with a professional taste? Then you should try a manual Espresso machine. Once you’ve mastered the skills, you’ll be able to make coffee exactly to your liking.

Filter Coffee – An affordable and reliable coffee maker that allows you to brew a large pot of coffee at once. All you need are your favourite coffee grounds and some cold water to make a wonderful cup of coffee.

2. Capacity & Speed

You should think about how many individuals the coffee maker will serve as well as how many cups it can brew. You’ll need a machine with a huge capacity if you plan on serving a significant number of individuals, however if you’re buying one for your home, you’ll require something much smaller. Consider a capsule or vending machine if you need a machine that brews quickly.

3. Maintenance

When it comes to determining which machine to buy, maintenance is crucial. You should be aware that you will need to clean your machine on a daily basis in order for it to last. The longevity and functionality of your coffee machine are determined by how well you maintain it. Varied machines have different requirements when it comes to maintenance. You’ll need to commit to daily cleaning and more intensive cleaning on occasion if you want to keep enjoying a superb cup of coffee.

4. Material & Quality

Convenience and user friendliness are usually at the top of the list when looking for a new coffee maker, and understandably so, but it’s also critical that the coffee machine is safe to use. To determine whether a coffee machine is safe to use look for one that has a BPA-Free label on it. Coffee machines with plastic material inside are dangerous, when this plastic comes into contact with hot liquids it releases a chemical known as BPA which is harmful to your health.

When purchasing a coffee machine, make sure it is convenient, safe to use, and easy to operate. A coffee machine that checks all of those criteria is dependable and capable of producing nearly any coffee beverage. How can you know if a coffee maker is worthwhile? Simply said, the finest machine to buy is one that is simple to use, does not endanger your health or safety, and comes with a guarantee, maintenance, and repair in the event it malfunctions.

Cleaning and maintaining your coffee equipment is as important as the coffee you buy when it comes to fresh quality coffee. Some cleaning products are simply a non-negotiable if you want to look after your equipment properly. We had a look at the Top 4 most popular Caffenu coffee machine cleaning products and will tell you below exactly how to use them and on which coffee machine they can and should be used on. The 22nd of April marks International Mother Earth Day. We celebrate this day to remind us that the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance. It should remind us that we should do more to protect the planet. In an effort to do so, many companies, including Caffenu, try to provide consumers with eco-friendly products. However, it is sometimes unclear what eco-friendly cleaning products are and how they work.

What are eco-friendly products?

Eco-friendly products are products that cause minimal impact on the environment. Additionally, these products go through a production process that considers the impact that the products will have on the environment throughout its lifecycle. We naturally want to produce products that have the least possible impact on the environment.

Eco-friendly products can range from reusable bags and straws, to the chemical composition and raw materials of a cleaning product you use. Because Caffenu is a leader in the coffee machine cleaning industry, we pay close attention to the eco-friendliness of the raw materials of cleaning products we produce.

Raw materials for cleaning products

Over the years, many cleaning products used to contain chemicals such as phosphates and sodium hydroxide, and many products still do contain these chemicals today which can be harmful to the environment. Phosphates are found in certain foods such as deli meats, and frozen food, because phosphates enhance the flavour of some foods. While phosphates are not dangerous in small amounts and traces, too much of them can lead to problems such as kidney and liver damage.

Moreover, phosphates have also been used in cleaning detergents, which end up in the drainage systems, and eventually the ocean. This is not good for aquatic life and living organisms. That is why many companies, including Caffenu, have opted to avoid the use of phosphates in production of cleaning materials.

Caffenu eco-friendly cleaning products

Caffenu strives to avoid the use of any harmful raw materials in the production of our cleaning products. We do our utmost to keep the environment a priority during production, down to our end product.

The Caffenu Eco Descaler is one example of our objective to provide eco-friendly cleaning. This product is entirely phosphate free, and uses zero chemicals that are harmful to the environment. While this product is eco-friendly, it is still powerful. A misconception many consumers have is that eco-friendly means “ineffective”. That is simply untrue.

Another such Caffenu product is the Caffenu cleaning capsule. The cleaning agent used in this capsule is made with organic and biodegradable materials. We even offer the Nespresso® compatible capsule itself in a compostable form. Although we always encourage good recycling practices.

You as the consumer have the power to decide which products will be successful on the market. So why not choose eco-friendly but highly effective products to clean your coffee machine. The environment will thank you for it!

The perks of having a capsule coffee machine like Nespresso® or Lavazza® are endless. You get to enjoy varieties of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate, all in the convenience of a capsule. These drinks, however, leave residue in your capsule coffee machine, but some drinks are worse than others. Here is the beverages that leave the worst residue in your capsule coffee machine. But don’t you worry, we will also guide you in how to remove these nasty residues.

Flavoured Coffee, Hot Chocolate, and Tea residues

The arrival of capsule drinks like flavoured coffee and hot chocolate was warmly welcomed by the capsule coffee machine community. Drinks like these are great and make having a capsule machine more worthwhile.

However, they tend to leave a dominating residue behind after each brew, affecting the taste of the next coffee you brew. Drinks like hot chocolate can leave an even thicker layer in your machine’s brewing chamber and washer plate. The washer plate especially builds up the most dirt, causing bacteria build-up and machine malfunction when left untended.

Flavoured coffees, on the other hand, can leave behind a bit more oil than regular coffee, due to the flavouring that is added to the beans. More odour and flavouring will also be left to linger in your next brew.

Those that enjoy brewing certain teas might even find a slight discolouration between brews, how’s about a cup of green coffee? All jokes aside, the combination of tastes and colours in your favourite coffee would not be pleasant.

You might find yourself tempted to stop with the flavoured coffees and hot chocolates now, but that isn’t necessary. There is a cleaning solution that will allow you to continue enjoying all these drinks!

There is only one way in effectively removing the residues of drinks like flavoured coffee, and hot chocolate. It can be achieved through the unique and powerful foaming action of a cleaning capsule.

The cleaning capsule can remove all beverage residue and oils from the brewing chamber and washer plate in just two minutes.

You might need to use two cleaning capsules if you haven’t cleaned your machine in a while, or at all. This is what comes out of your machine when using a Caffenu® cleaning capsule.

See? There’s no need to give up all the special drinks you enjoy brewing. All you need is to do some cleaning to prepare your machine for the next taste adventure!
